Supporting routine and surveillance diagnostic services in Mombasa County, Kenya
This intervention study will demonstrate the use of a BIONEAR in enhancing and strengthening routine and surveillance diagnostic services in Mombasa county.
Availability of timely laboratory diagnosis has been a long-standing challenge in resource-limited countries like Kenya, especially in rural settings where disease burdens are high. They are neither accessible nor affordable, hence health indicators remain poor. This has made laboratory diagnostics one of the weakest links in the cascade of care for many conditions.
The study will involve a baseline analysis of the diagnostic test capacity and level of utilization of services for Mombasa County, followed by an intervention phase where a fully equipped BIONEAR will be deployed. The impact and value will be assessed and finally a sustainability model will be proposed.
A three-month pilot study will be rolled-out in Mombasa, Kenya in 2022 to address unmet diagnostic needs and assess the workability of our healthcare delivery service platform in its current model.
Beyond funding the BIONEAR and its operational expenses, our partner FIND contributes extensively by:
To ensure a meaningful deployment of our BIONEARS and services, FIND has conducted a full market analysis and in-depth interviews.
The market analysis helped us understand how our vehicles and services fit into the current diagnostics market landscape in Kenya. Additionally, it tested its intended settings for its priority use cases, i.e. epidemic outbreak response, surveillance, hospital and referral centre support and on-site training.
In-depth interviews with national stakeholders gave us different insights and paved the way for engagement with local implementation partners.
